Accommodations
STV Unicorn has five luxurious guest staterooms: four midship guest rooms and a fifth larger owner's cabin aft plus crew cabin for six. The new accoummodatons feature maple cabinetry and teak and holly cabin soles. Maple was chosen over mahogany for interior spaces to create a warm ambiance without being overly dark. Hull has R11 insulaton throughout. All guest quarters have air conditioning and their own electric heads and showers with queen sized berths. Interior lights have dimmer switches to help create the mood appropriate to the moment. A comfortable aft salon offers guests an informal gathering space for business discusssions or a place to just relax with a good book. The galley is completely new and equipped with modern commerical kitchen facilities. Unicorn cruises comfortably with six to ten guests aboard, plus a professional crew up to six.

Electrical
The vessel underwent a complete electrical system re-fit in 2003 and 2004.
Located on the inboard starboard side of the aft engine room bulkhead is the main 24VDC electrical panel box. This box powers the 24V applications. A sub panel is run to the Navigation station in the aft salon. This panel controls navigation lights, spreader lights, emergency lights and other related applications.

Directly below this box are the house batteries contained in a wooden battery box, consisting of 12 6V batteries, connected into 3 banks of 24v.

Facing the 24V panel, immediately to the right, are the sine 24V invertors. This inverter system allows for selected120V applications to be run off of the house batteries.

Immediately to the right of the inverters is the inverter powered panel box. All breakers are labeled in this box as to their use.

A 12VDC system powers the ships electronics which are located in the aft salon and the pilot house. Emergency 12V back up batteries are located in the pilot house under the bench seat and are on constant regulated charge.

Sails
Square topsail, gaff-rigged schooner flying seven sails, with four special purpose sails available for specific wind conditions. Steel masts with wooden topmasts.
The Sail Plan is that of a top's'l (topsail) schooner, meaning she is fore and aft rigged on the lower masts and carries three square sails on her fore mast (two on the fore top and one, the course, just below the doubling). The square sails are set from three yards; the upper and lower top's'l and the course. The course sail is the only one of the squares not attached to the yard; it is set from the deck and is used much like a modern day spinnaker. She has three headsails consisting of an outer jib, inner jib (located on the jib boom) and fore stay's'l (staysail). The fore and main sails' are gaff rigged, with booms made of Douglas Fir. The rig is traditional in nature in that the sails are raised and lowered via block and tackle without the assistance of mechanical winches.

STV Unicorn is an inspected and certified Sail Training Vessel. She is equipped with all required fire and safety devices. 2 generators provide on-board power.

Mechanical
The engine room is lead lined barrier foam for sound deadening.
Main Engine is an after cooled 354 HP Caterpillar 3406 Turbo Charged, serial #4TB01102. This engine was purchased from Toremont Diesel Supply of Toronto, Ontario in 1997 as a factory rebuilt unit. The Engine was last overhauled by a factory authorized facility (Atlantic Tractor, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia) in December of 2003. The engine has a 52" fixed four blade propellor.
Main Generator is a Perkins Diesel with a Marathon Electric generator running power output of 46 KVA at 1850 rpm. This unit was purchased as new and assembled by TNT Generators Limited in Kingston, Ontario. The unit was brought on line in December 2003.
The second (back up) generator is a Kubota model V1505-EBGI, serial number YJ4238. The unit was initially installed in June 2000 as a replacement to the main generator. The ship's power requirements were substantially less than before the 2002 through 2004 re-fit so this unit was sufficient. As a result of the re-fit, it was assigned the role of #2 backup generator. It is used when AC power requirements are minimal.
The vessel has two main fuel tanks built into the hull on the port side. The forward tank is located forward of the Engine Room Bulkhead and the aft Tank is located aft of the Perkins generator. Tanks are of 3/8" steel wall construction and each has a multiple bolted, gasketed access panel on the inboard panel for cleaning and maintenance purposes. Forward tank was serviced in September 2003 and aft tank in May 2003. Each tank has a flush deck fill sealed by a fine threaded cap and protected by a turn deck cover. The deck covers and tank breathers are clearly marked. The forward tank capacity is 544 US gallons and the aft tank capacity is 375 US Gallons.
The vessels' fresh water tank is located in the mid-ship section on the starboard side between the secondary bulkhead and the engine room bulkhead. It is made of 3/8" welded steel plating and uses the inner hull and deck head as integral tank walls. It has a gasketed access plate held in by multiple bolts and its' fill pipe and breather pipe are clearly marked directly above it on the port deck waterway. The fill pipe is sealed by a fine threaded cap, and the deck plate is of the turn locking variety. The Tanks capacity is approx. 1197.5 US Gallons. The tank was sandblasted and epoxy painted in April 2003 at Scotia Trawler in Lunenburg Nova Scotia. In addition, fresh water can be made and introduced to the tank via a Sea Recovery component water making system also mounted in convenient spaces on the port side of the engine room. The system runs on either generator or shore power and can produce up to 600 US gal. per day. Water pressure is maintained by two zone pumps and a 35 PSI capacity pressure tank. Hot water is produced by two 11 gallon stainless steel-water heaters which draw energy from 220V AC power or via a heat exchange from the Main Engine in line cooling system. Each heater tank has an independent shut off.
The Air Conditioning system consists of seven water cooled reverse cycle units that have added heating elements for use in cold water climates. The galley unit is 16,000 BTU. The aft salon is 16,000 BTU. The aft master cabin is 12,000 BTU.The guest cabin units consist of 6,000 and 9,000 BTU units and the forepeak crew cabin shares a 12,000 BTU unit with a the forward guest cabin

Deck
Deck layout includes; raised aft deck with pilot house; providing weather protected steering, engine controls and navigation station. Second Wheel is on the weather deck just forward of the pilot house. Two island deckhouses are located just fore and after mid-ships. Aft deckhouse houses second navigation station with access to master accommodations. Forward deckhouse houses galley and access to focs'le and mid-ship accommodations. Engine room is located below aft deckhouse. Access to Engine room is via mid-ship deck hatch and watertight door in mid-ship passage way, below decks.

Hull
Vessel is full keel, round bottom with clipper style schooner bow and canoe stern. Hull design is, swept sheer with raised bulwarks.
Originally built in 1947 as a Dutch, North Sea Fishing Trawler, the vessel's hull construction was accomplished via the re-utilization of steel and steel plating that was taken from the hulls of the German U Boat fleet that had been delivered to Holland as war reparations at the end of the Second World War. Hence the steel plating which makes up the hull from the collision bulkhead aft is of high nickel-brass content. This part is constructed of riveted steel plates overlapped over fabricated structural steel ribs spaced 45 centimeters (approx1. 17") on center; with stringers and re-enforced by welded steel bulkheads. All repairs to the riveted portions of the hull have been in accordance with US Coast Guard and Transport Canada general repair guidelines
History
Unicorn's sturdy hull was crafted in Holland in 1947 from steel salvaged from German U-boats. She was launched as a motor fishing vessel working the North Atlantic. By 1979 she had been converted into a sailing ship and renamed Eenhorn or "one horn", Dutch for Unicorn. In 1986, under new owners, she crossed the Atlantic to the United States and her name was anglicized to Unicorn. For the next decade, Unicorn was a charter ship familiar to sailors from the northern Maritime Provinces to the southernmost Caribbean islands and as far west as Australia.
In the mid-90's Unicorn was acquired by a Canadian couple and went through a major rebuilding of the hull, rig and systems to be converted into a Canadian certified sail training vessel. In 1997 she was launched with a new name, True North of Toronto, and new specifications. Hundreds of sailors trained aboard her in the Great Lakes, along the east coast and in the Caribbean. She became an American Sail Training Association "event" tallship and began appearing with the ASTA fleet at port festivals.
In the fall of 1999, True North was acquired by its current owners. Along with their four daughters, they have continued to promote the preservation of traditional maritime life through tallship festivals, community involvement and sail training programmes. In December of 2003, the schooner completed a bow to stern refit that took the ship down to its steel ribs, and has been rechristened with her original name, Unicorn. With her new first-class accommodations and high end electronics and systems, she has once again set sail with a new dream and charted course.
 
Recent Improvements
An extensive re-fit of all systems and accommodations were undertaken in 2002 through 2004. Plumbing, fresh water, bilge, sanitation galley and related systems were all replaced and upgraded. A complete electrical system overhaul was undertaken and fire and safety systems were upgraded. New non-opening port-lights were purchased from a U.S manufacturer and new, heavy gauge aluminum hatches were fabricated. This work was performed by CSE Ltd, Halifax Nova Scotia, and Scotia Trawler, Lunenburg Nova Scotia between September of 2002 and August of 2004. The vessel was dry-docked in October of 2004 at the Heddle Marine Shipyard in Hamilton Ontario. Work performed included removal and maintenance of propeller shaft and bearing, removal and rebuilding of transmission, removal and repair of steel plating at upper end of rudder post, replacement of rudder bearings, re-positioning of starboard hawse pipe, removal of through hull fitting forward of engine room bulkhead (through-hull fittings, port and starboard are now in the engine room), and complete inspection and repair of hull after sandblasting to "white metal." Hull was primed with epoxy and painted.

Vessel's current main engine, an after cooled, turbo charged Caterpillar 3406 (installed in 1997) had a regularly scheduled top end performed in November of 2003 by factory authorized dealer, Atlantic Tractor. The Kubota Marathon 12 KVA generator was re-powered in June 2004 by Fort Pierce Diesel. Perkins 46 KVA main generator was brought on line in December of 2003 and its' cooling system upgraded in August 2004.

In addition, between January and March, 2005 additional safety features were added by Embree welding of St. Petersburg, Fl. These included the re-enforcement of the Engine Room's watertight bulkhead, just aft of the main mast step, the replacement of 2, six dog manual watertight doors (engine room and mid-ship) with quick acting wheel type doors, the addition of an on deck fireproof (aluminum) propane locker, the upgrading of deck hatch dogs to stainless steel wing nut types and the addition of an on deck outboard engine mount.
